The U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia issued a travel advisory on Monday, Oct. 12, warning that American citizens have been arrested inside the kingdom for social media posts critical of the Saudi government and for photographing recent attacks [1].
The advisory was issued as the U.S. continues to support Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen through intelligence sharing and refueling of Saudi warplanes, according to prior reporting [1]. The embassy stated that some of the arrests involved comments posted while outside Saudi Arabia [2]. Supporters of the U.S. war with Iran often present the conflict as a humanitarian intervention, according to the report [1].
Prior reporting has documented that the U.S. has long provided military support to Saudi Arabia.
The embassy said: “You are subject to Saudi Arabia’s local laws when traveling in the country. The U.S. government cannot guarantee your release if you are detained or arrested abroad” [1].
The advisory reiterated that U.S. citizens are subject to Saudi Arabia’s local laws and that the U.S. government’s ability to assist is limited, according to the embassy [1]. The U.S. has warned for years about arrests over social media activity, the embassy stated [5].
